How AI is Shaping Patient-Centric Healthcare
You may have seen artificial intelligence (AI) dominating the headlines recently – and for good reason. AI has the potential to transform not just how we live and work, but also how we receive healthcare.
So, how does AI in healthcare work? It’s important to remember that AI tools used by medical imaging devices are much different than new AI models like ChatGPT. Medical imaging AI, for example, has been used for decades to help healthcare professionals swiftly analyze data, aid in detecting abnormalities, and interpret this information to make more informed diagnoses.
Lawmakers are taking note of these benefits. In a recent hearing on AI and healthcare, the Senate Committee on Finance highlighted how AI in medical imaging is revolutionizing both accessibility and affordability for patients nationwide.
During the hearing, witnesses described how AI has made previously impossible images visible to physicians so they can accurately diagnose and treat life-threatening conditions at earlier stages. One witness, for example, shared that AI-guided computer software has helped physicians identify and measure nodules and other abnormalities apparent in patients with lung cancer, while also minimizing the patients’ time in a scanner.
AI isn’t just a futuristic concept – it’s an innovative tool that has and continues to positively impact patient care. As AI evolves, it’s critical to ensure all patients – not just those who can pay out of pocket – have access to AI tools that help doctors. We can do that by encouraging Medicare to recognize the value AI brings to patient care by appropriately reimbursing physicians who use FDA-approved AI tools.
