How Focused Ultrasound Helped One Patient Treat His Prostate Cancer

When Michael Swann turned 60, his urologist explained the importance of monitoring prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels as an indicator of prostate health. The doctor told Michael that if his PSA ever reached 5.0 that he should get a biopsy done. Because of that advice, eight years later, when Michael’s PSA did reach 5.0, he knew to seek a biopsy.

Michael’s biopsy did show evidence of cancer in one place, however, the doctor told Michael it was low-risk prostate cancer and unlikely to spread.  A recommendation of active surveillance was made, which for Michael meant having his PSA checked every year and biopsy every other year.

After two back-to-back biopsies both showed additional and significant signs of malignancy, Michael became increasingly concerned about his health.  No longer comfortable with a “wait and see” approach, Michael’s new doctor recommended a radical prostatectomy. While he knew he had to address his cancer, this sudden and extreme shift in treatment plan led Michael to investigate other treatment options.

Michael’s brother-in-law introduced him to focused ultrasound, and Michael liked the idea of a less invasive treatment option. He found a physician who was able to answer all of his questions who specialized in focused ultrasound prostate cancer treatments. Michael decided to undergo focused ultrasound treatment. He was, and still is, amazed that his doctor’s promise of “virtually no side effects” proved true— and it remains true to this day.

Michael’s treatment has given him more time to spend with his family and to work at his law practice. More than ever, he encourages all men to look at their options and advocate for themselves. It may have taken meetings with three doctors to find an option that worked for him, but now, a year later, Michael knows it was absolutely worth it for him and his wife for an outcome that improves his overall well-being and has changed his life.
