Patient Spotlight: Prostate Cancer Survivor Robert Palmer Shares His Experience with Focused Ultrasound Treatment

With prostate cancer affecting 1 in 8 men, according to the American Cancer Society, many men worry about the enduring side effects of traditional treatments, including incontinence and erectile dysfunction. Rather than risking the side effects of radiation and surgery, Robert, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2023, decided to undergo an incision-free, radiation-free, minimally invasive procedure.  

Focused ultrasound technology can uniquely destroy diseased prostate tissue by using guided, directional thermal ultrasound to gently heat and destroy targeted tissue without surgery. The transurethral, ultrasound ablative procedure offers an alternative method of treatment to radical prostatectomy or radiation therapy, which carries a greater risk of life-altering side effects. This incision-free treatment, which can be completed in a matter of hours, allows patients to avoid damaging healthy nerves and cells.  

During the 2024 focused ultrasound fly-in, prostate cancer survivor Robert Palmer had the opportunity to reflect on how this innovative treatment option has helped him avoid invasive surgery and maintain his quality of life. By advocating for education and access to cutting-edge medical technologies, like focused ultrasound, Robert and his fellow advocates are paving the way for improved outcomes for patients.
